Institute for Safe Medication Practices Joins Council

September 16, 1998 — At a recent meeting, the National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention unanimously accepted the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) as a regular, full voting At-Large Member of the Council for a two-year period. With the addition of ISMP, the Council has 17 members.

ISMP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the global health care community about methods to prevent adverse drug events. Previously, ISMP's contribution to the Council was as an ex-officio, non-voting member, as chair of the USP Advisory Panel on Medication Errors.

In announcing ISMP's appointment, Council Chairperson Deborah Nadzam commented, "The ISMP's long history of effectiveness in medication error prevention will bolster our ability to reach consensus on issues facing health care professionals nationwide."
